Capt. Tuuli Messer-Bookman is a Professor Emerita from California Maritime Academy. Her books include The Master's Handbook on Ship's Business, 3rd ed., Close Quarters: A Woman's Guide to Living and Working in Masculine Environments, and Maritime Casualties: Causes and Consequences. She was a contributing author to the 2019 edition of Bowditch. She has authored numerous articles and has been an invited speaker at venues including yacht clubs, boat shows, civic clubs, national parks and offered a Maritime Lecture Series at Tacoma Community College. She is a 1986 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and holds an unlimited tonnage oceans master's license. She has over 300,000 miles at sea as a ship's officer and is also an avid recreational boater. She continues to teach as a contract instructor at Compass Courses in Edmonds, WA and MITAGS in Seattle.
